Local information
Our villa is the perfect base from which to explore the many riches Cyprus has to offer. Cyprus has something for everyone. It is an island of contrasts from the cooler Troodos mountains offering hiking and skiing in winter to its famed warm coastal regions with miles of golden sandy beaches and rocky coves. The crystal clear turquoise waters provide a haven for watersport enthusiasts including sailing, windsurfing, snorkelling, diving or deep sea fishing. Its strategic position in the Mediterranean has been coveted by major powers throughout the ages. This has led to a long, often turbulent history. The Ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Phoenicians, Venetians, Ottomans and the British have all left their stamp creating a fascinating heritage, rich in culture and archeology. Why not visit some of the ancient sites such as the Tombs of the Kings or explore some of the old villages where many of the old crafts are still practised? If sport is your thing, then beyond the mentioned golf and watersports, there is horse riding, tennis, carting, bowling, hiking and cycling all to be had close by. On a more leisurely theme why not take a tour of the wine regions or perhaps a relaxing cruise along the coast. There is plenty for kids too. As well as the lovely beaches attractions include pitch and putt, cinemas, ten pin bowling, go-karting and water theme parks. There is a great variety of eating places to be found ranging from traditional Cypriot fayre to more cosmopolitan ones such as Brazilian, Indian, Chinese, Lebanese and Italian. You can even find English and Irish pub food, pizza and of course MacDonalds and KFC! But fine dining is well catered for too. The range of food on offer covers a spectrum in terms of quality and price but there is always something for everyone. For restaurant ideas and review ratings please click on Paphos-Eating. The Cypriot people are renowned for their warmth and hospitality and whilst Greek is their main language, English is spoken extensively. Driving is on the left hand side and the electricity supply is the same as in the UK. The plugs are even the same so you can use your UK appliances. The country is very safe too with one of the lowest crime rates in western Europe. Cyprus offers near all year round sunshine (330 days typically) making it a fantastic and reliable holiday destination. Click here to see the latest weather forecast for Paphos. For local car hire we have found Costas Demetriou to be very reliable and good value. His website can be found at cyprusvillascypruscars.com or email c.demetriou@cytanet.com.cy. A representative (normally Costas) will meet you at Paphos airport (holding a card with your name) which helps avoiding the usual queues encountered at the airport hire booths. We’ve also found that they help you with your luggage and packing the car. Great when travelling with kids and golf clubs!
